Double joy for the school

It was a day of double celebration for Bishop Challoner on Friday January 22. The school’s £47 million Learning Village project was officially opened while our Executive Head, Mrs Myers, received an award from the Pope.
The opening of the buildings at the school was preceded by a Mass at St Mary and St Michael Church taken by Bishop George Stack, in the presence of the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols.
During the service Archbishop Nichols announced that Mrs Myers, had been made a Dame of the Pontifical Order of St Gregory the Great.
He presented her with the medal and citation from Pope Benedict XVI and said: “The Learning Village project could not have come to fruition without Catherine Myers.”
Bishop Stack praised the “visionary courage” of Mrs Myers and her team in creating the Learning Village.
Mrs Myers, who has been head for 18 years, said: “The project buildings are a practical example of the high expectations placed on the school.”
In 2001 Bishop Challoner became Britain’s first federated school with separate Boys and Girls’ Schools and mixed Sixth Form College on the same site.
The redevelopment, which began in 2006, sees the school emerge with state-of-the-art buildings and facilities which will be shared with the local community.
Among the key buildings are the Sports Hall, New Theatre, Dance Studio plus science laboratories. Later this year the scheme will be complete with the opening of the Village Club community building and all-weather sports pitches.
Among those attending the opening ceremony were representatives of the Westminster Diocese and Tower Hamlets Council plus Jim Fitzpatrick, MP for Poplar and Canning Town.

A Letter from the Executive Head

We are delighted that you are considering sending your son or daughter to Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School and I hope we can offer them a place. Bishop Challoner is the first Federated school in the country – with separate Boys, Girls and Sixth Form schools on the one site. We believe that girls and boys are successful when educated separately between the ages of 11 and 16.

Our Learning Village development will achieve this with separate schools for children in that age group, while offering them access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources. As a collegiate school, we are continually successful at producing high-level public examination results. We are a happy and friendly school of over 1,700 students and welcome boys and girls from all backgrounds.

Being multicultural, there are 73 languages spoken in the school. As Director, I am proud of what our students achieve. I believe that any student joining Bishop Challoner can reach their fullest potential and, in partnership with parents, I am confident that the coming years will be a period of great success. Our website will give you a flavour of life at Bishop Challoner.

For more detailed information please contact the school for a full prospectus. Following that, why not come and see us at one of our open evenings or make an appointment to visit the school? We look forward to meeting you.

Catherine Myers,
Executive Head of the Collegiate Schools
